Riverfire opening event

Joanna Jordan
Special Events
was appointed as the Creative Director of Riverfire
– the Opening event of Riverfestival 2004. Brisbane’s biggest
annual public celebration, Riverfire utilises iconic structures such as the
Story Bridge and the CBD landscape as the platform to launch 30 minutes of
spectacular fireworks. Riverfire is choreographed to a specifically produced
music soundtrack broadcast on Triple M and simulcast on Channel Nine. The
finale of Riverfire features a spectacular ‘dump and burn’ by two RAAF F111’s
over the heart of the City.

More than 500,000
people viewed this year’s event from many inner City vantage points including
South Bank, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Riverside Centre, Captain Burke Park and
City offices. In addition, 350,000 people throughout South East Queensland
tuned into Channel Nine’s live telecast of Riverfire.

The role of Joanna Jordan Special Events was to develop an
opening event for Riverfestival that met the vision of the festival while
at the same time meeting the needs of the other key stakeholders. For the
first time this year Riverfire was simulcast on Channel Nine and Triple M
which meant one product had to be created to suit TV and radio while at the
same times meeting the needs of the live event.

Operationally the
footprint for the event had to be reviewed to cater to the audience numbers
estimated at around 500,000. This review impacted upon City wide authorities
such as Police, Maritime Divisions, Transport, venues etc. A 30 minute music
soundtrack was produced in conjunction with Triple M and then there was the
small job of selecting the 4000 fireworks items and choreographing them to
400 cues in the soundtrack!
